Following the announcement that Wilfried Zaha has been called up to Roy Hodgson’s full England squad, Stephen Browett has said it’s a testament to the work our Academy has done over the years.

Speaking to the South London Press, Browett heaped praise on Gary Issott and our Academy set up, but said he wasn’t worried that Wilf’s head might be turned.

‘Zaha is a perfect advertisement for our Academy and the hard work that Gary Issott does. Without education in our Academy he wouldn’t be called up by England. It’s always a risk when players are exposed to the national media and they are getting at the attention – their head might be turned. But Wilf is a sensible young man, he knows he’s loved at Palace. Our supporters, the owners love him and his team mates. Sometimes people are not daft and the grass is not always greener. He knows he’ll be playing in the Premier League sooner rather than later – hopefully that’s for us.’

I think most are surprised to see him called up so quickly, but with a long term hat on, this will do Wilf’s valuation no harm at all, and it’ll be a fantastic experience that will further aide his own development.

Well done lad!
