Crystal Palace v Aston Villa: Team News and Preview

|

Scott Dann could be out for Saturday’s fixture against Aston Villa after picking up a hand injury against Colchester.

Mamdou Sakho trained with the first team on Friday and is close to a return to the first team but is still unavailable along with James Tomkins.

Joel Ward, Jeffery Schlupp and Patrick Van Aanholt could return to first team action after being rested for the Carabao Cup defeat to Colchester on Tuesday night.

Roy Hodgson may choose to name an unchanged side from the United victory if all players are available. Victor Camarasa put in a solid performance in mid week so he may start in place of the out of form Max Meyer. Jordan Ayew looks set to retain his place ahead of Christian Benteke and Conor Wickham after a confident start to the season.

James Chester won’t feature for Villa and left back Matthew Targett has also been ruled out after coming off with a hamstring problem against Crewe in mid week. Forward, Jonathan Kodjia, could return to action this weekend.

Dean Smith otherwise has a full squad to choose from and he may keep the same side which beat Everton last Friday.

Preview

The last two weeks for Palace have been typical. The awful performance at Sheffield United, the historic win at Old Trafford then the shock defeat to Colchester would not have surprised too many veteran Palace fans.

The away performance at United was spirited and two well taken goals provided the three points. Such a counter attacking setup has been typical of Palace away from home, but it is the home form which is a cause for concern.

It is clear that Palace’s home form needs to improve drastically this season with only 5 wins coming from Selhurst Park last season. Being clinical in front of the home support is also crucial as Palace scored the joint lowest home goals last season with just 19.

Villa’s creativity in midfield and attacking pace could cause problems for Palace with John McGinn and Jack Grealish looking to get forward and unlock the Palace defence.

Striker Wesley could also cause problems. The striker looked sharp against Everton and was in the thick of the action going forward so he will be an important focal point for Villa.

Form

Although it is still early in the season, both teams have had a similar start. Palace have drawn, lost and won in three matches so far while Villa picked up their first three points with a deserved victory at home to Everton last week, moving them up to 16th in the league.

Palace’s indifferent start to the season means we have already experienced the extreme highs and lows of the season in just 3 Premier League games so far and currently sit 10th in the table.

Despite this, Palace are 5th in the form table for 2019, securing 34 points in the league since January so the Eagles will be looking to maintain some momentum.

Villa have not looked out of their depth so far and have started the season with intent to attack and create chances. Their youthful attack and midfield could cause problems against what could be a weakened Palace defence.

Previous Meetings

The most recent meeting between the two sides came in January 2016 at Villa Park where Villa won 1-0 following a fumbled own goal from Wayne Hennessey.

Palace won the last time the two teams met at Selhurst Park in August 2015 as Scott Dann and Bakary Sako scored to secure a 2-1 victory for the Eagles.

Villa have found it difficult at Selhurst Park, only winning twice in in their last 12 Premier League visits and scoring just 4 goals.
