Dougie Freedman has put his ‘headmaster’ hat on with growing calls for more pitch time for Wilfried Zaha especially.

Speaking to Newshopper Freedman said he won’t be swayed by the fans’ when it comes to the younger players, and he’s determined to protect their development.

‘What the fans want, and what the fans get will be what I decide. What happened with Wilfried last season was that he was played too much, the problem with youngsters is it’s difficult to play them week in, week out, because the expectations are too much. We’ve got to be patient with the lads.’

It’s clear Freedman, with Zaha at least, sees him as developing better at the moment with a somewhat limited pitch element. Give him a run, then use him for impact. Keep hungry and fresh.

Sounds fair enough to me and who am I to argue with Dougie?
