Striker Marouane Chamakh has said he was delighted to get two goals in today’s FA Cup fourth round victory over Southampton at St Mary’s.

The former Arsenal player had been out for six weeks with a hamstring injury and he scored to get us back into the game, and then grabbed the winner on his return and he got just over an hour under his belt again.

Speaking to Crystal Palace FC following the full time whistle, he explained it was pleasing to come straight back into a side high on confidence following our recent run of results, and he was delighted to have played his part in continuing that.

‘I’m happy because we won and I scored, but we were also better than them and that’s why I’m very proud of this victory. I was really happy to get the two goals as during the week I didn’t know I was going to start the game as I haven’t played for the last six weeks. I found out I was playing on Thursday so it was really important for me to enjoy the sensation of playing with the team again because they’ve played really well since the new manager arrived and I wanted to continue in the same way.’

With Chamakh returning, it was the first time he played alongside Arsenal loanee Yaya Sanogo at the club, and he of course grabbed his first goal for Palace, putting us back on level terms for the second time in the game.

‘It was our first game together and I think we had some chemistry. I’m really happy he scored, rather than myself, because he’s going to be more confident for us and I think he’ll do well this season.’

With him coming off after the hour mark, he also confirmed that his hamstring had felt fine in training and he felt fine after coming off the pitch as well, so it was just about boosting his confidence and his fitness, and he didn’t expect to finish the game – but he didn’t come off because he felt anything.
