Liverpool Disappointment For Ward

Defender Joel Ward has admitted everybody was disappointed following the FA Cup loss to Liverpool because the players knew it was a fantastic opportunity for us.

Speaking to Crystal Palace FC following the two one defeat, Ward said most of the disappointment came from the fact that we knew we had the opportunities to have killed the game off before Liverpool got back on level terms and then ultimately took the lead themselves.

‘I don’t think we kept the ball well enough to hurt them but I think in the first half we put ourselves in a great position after not having too much of the possession but then we dominating for a bit. We were in with a good chance of winning the game but we didn’t do ourselves justice.’

Ward goes on to say that obviously Liverpool are a good team and you have to make the time you are on top in a game like that count, and we unfortunately didn’t.

‘I think for the majority of the game we defended well as a team. In the first half we could have probably scored a couple more goals on the counter attack and we stopped them from having too many chances, but it was just one of those games.’

With Ward taking on a new midfield role for this game, further showing his versatility, he explained that having been asked to do that he was more than happy to, and again for the most part he felt he did well as did the team, but once they were ahead we were ‘chasing’ them them and we just couldn’t penetrate the defence enough or hurt them properly in the final third to get ourselves back in it.

With Pape Souare having a somewhat mixed debut in many ways, Ward added words of encouragement for his new teammate.

‘It’s early days but I’m confident that he’ll grow as he settles into the Premier League. Sometimes it can take a little time but so far so good and hopefully he’ll continue to move forward.’
