It was being reported yesterday evening that Charlton Athletic were interested in Crystal Palace starlet Sullay Kaikai.

Following the transfer of Ricky Holmes to Sheffield United, Charlton have room to spare in their wage budget despite takeover talks at the club seeing their owner close the chequebook for January signings.

Kaikai has been linked this month with moves to Championship sides Barnsley and Brentford but manager Karl Robinson has reportedly moved quickly to register his interest in Kaikai as a replacement.

For Palace, knowing Kaikai is likely to get good game time as Holmes’ replacement, plus the proximity to his parent club, it appears they are willing to sanction the move.

Especially in light of the fact they prefer a loan deal and Barnsley and Brentford are reportedly after a loan to buy option for the 22 year old.

Palace are also said to be wary that following his loan to League One Shrewsbury Town where he won accolades for his 12 goals in 29 matches, his next loan spell to Brentford saw him only take in 18 appearances last season, with a return of three goals – but substitute showings dominated his spell at Griffin Park.
