Manager Alan Pardew has admitted he was gutted to lose the game to Manchester City today, but he did play down the disagreement with Manuel Pellegrini.

In quotes carried by London24 from his post game press conference, the set to with Pellegrini featured highly in the questioning.

Sparked by a rough tackle on James McArthur by Yaya Toure, the gaffer answered.

‘I was little bit incensed by the tackle and I went past Manuel`s box and he wasn`t pleased with that. I moved back to my box like a good boy. And we shook hands because we were enjoying it. It was a tough game and a tough standard of football to play.’

Turning talk to the game itself, he went on to say that in the second period he definitely knew Manchester City had improved their game, and he had to acknowledge that maybe on balance they had deserved the late winner but it certainly didn’t make it any easier to take or accept given our own performance on the day.

‘In the second half Man City definitely improved and perhaps deserved the right to nick the match-winner. Of course I feel a little hard done by. You get so far in a feisty tough game, a battle between two good sides, and to concede in the last minute really hurts. I thought the referee struggled a bit with the game. Scotty Dann`s yellow for me was a tough challenge and a yellow card was quite right. Yaya`s was worse but I think he got the key decisions right.’

Defender Brede Hangeland was also interviewed after the game and he admitted the result was hard to swallow given our efforts, but he felt we could take a lot of positives from it.

On a personal note he was pleased to get his first league start of the season.

‘It`s tough to take. It`s the worst way to lose a game of football. We fought hard and played well in a relatively even game against the league leaders, so to lose like that in the last minute is gutting. When it approaches 90 minutes and it`s still a draw you hope for a point or even three, so there`s a little disappointment but there were plenty of good points. It was a good game and a hard one at that with chances at both ends and on another day we could have won it. We can take confidence that we played well against a side that have won five out of five and not conceded a goal and created chances against them. We`re on the way to good things and today is proof of that. We battled really hard and to come away with nothing is disappointment but there`s plenty of confidence we can take. We had a good go but it just wasn`t to be today.’
