With Sunday being the final day of the Premier League season of 2016/17, the Golden Boot Winner is now known.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane tops the pile for 2016/17 with his sterling end of season form propelling him to 29 goals for the campaign. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku took second spot sitting on 25 for the year and Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez sitting on 24 for the year.
With this season being the second highest goal return since the rebranding of the Premier League with a total of 1,064 goals scored in the top flight, it looked for a period of time like we’d see a record number of players break the 20 goal mark.
Had that happened it would’ve been the first time six players reached 20 in the league since the 1994/95 campaign when the top flight was still a 42 match division.
The reduction in games is worth noting because the Premier League has only registered five or more players scoring 20 or over on three occasions – six in 1993/94 and 1994/95 with 42 games, and then five in 2009/10.
As the campaign comes to a close only five players made it over the 20 mark, with Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero completing the five with 20 goals each.
