Wednesday 18th January 2017 – FA CUP THIRD ROUND REPLAY
Newcastle United v Birmingham City 19:45

Non-league sides Sutton and Lincoln will look to make sure they take places in the fourth round by seeing off Football League opponents Wimbledon and Ipswich – respectively – on Tuesday. As the Imps have the advantage – they could have easily won at Portman Road – of being at Sincil Bank they would probably be seen as the more likely to cause an upset against the Tractor Boys.
League 2 Blackpool look to beat Championship side Barnsley at Oakwell. Should Pools achieve this win boss Gary Bowyer knows he’ll face a fourth round tie with his former club Blackburn at Ewood Park.
The all-Premier League meeting between Burnley – who have such a great record at Turf Moor this season – and Sunderland will see the Clarets looking to leave the visitors ‘concentrating on the league’ and the Black Cats’ relegation battle.
Fleetwood are looking to secure promotion out of League 1 – via the play-offs – with Bristol City set on avoiding relegation from the Championship back to that level. The Robins’ league form has been woeful ahead of this replay at the Highbury Stadium where the Cod Army should fancy their chances.
Sam Allardyce’s pressing concern is to keep Crystal Palace in the Premier League. However, a first win as Palace boss against his former side Bolton wouldn’t be turned away. Defeat at Selhurst Park against the League 1 side wouldn’t do much to improve the confidence – which is lacking – of the Eagles even if the FA Cup might not be seen as the priority for last seasons runners up.
Wednesday will see Newcastle taking a break from their Championship promotion bid – having returned to the top of the table at the weekend – when playing host to Birmingham at St James’ Park. The Blues are still seeking a first win under Gianfranco Zola.
Plymouth’s main priority will also be promotion – from League 2 – but after holding Liverpool to a draw at Anfield the Pilgrims will target a famous cup upset – to go with the money this replay has generated – at Home Park against the Reds.
The next cup-tie Southampton will be involved with – after this of course – will be the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool. The Saints’ – they are 1-0 up in that tie – immediate priority is to see of Norwich at the St Mary’s Stadium though.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
