We’ll see a Friday night double header as we move towards the season climax, which technically begins with Everton v Watford, due to a slightly earlier kick off time. The Toffees, assured of seventh, want to end a three game winless run whereas the Hornets, not mathematically clear of relegation, look to end a hat trick of defeats.
A miserable run of six games without a win, including four defeats, would suggests West Brom could, many would say should, be the side against whom Chelsea are confirmed as Premier League champions? Albion, eighth, will almost certainly lose their position if an upset isn’t seen at the Hawthorns, but the equation is simple for the Blues, collect all three points and they’ll be champions with two games to spare.
Manchester City, fifth, can ill-afford a slip up against Leicester in Saturday’s lunchtime kick off. Should City extend an unbeaten run to six with a win they’ll be assured of staying at least three points of Arsenal, fifth, at the end of the day. The Foxes, currently ninth but looking to finish as high as eighth, bid for a third straight win.
Effectively both Bournemouth and Burnley are clear from relegation danger. Mathematically the Clarets can go down, which is highly unlikely, a point would make certain. The Cherries, whatever the result at Dean Court, can look forward to a third successive Premier League season, and they said they wouldn’t last in the topflight.
Second-bottom Middlesbrough, who had relegation confirmed by Monday nights defeat against champions-elect Chelsea, are now playing for pride in the visit of Southampton to the Riverside. The Saints, 10th, can finish as high as eighth, a win against Boro would help.
Already relegated Sunderland didn’t do Hull any favours a week ago. It’ll be hoped, from a City point of view, the Black Cats can do the same to Swansea at the Stadium of Light. However, a win for the Swans and they’ll definitely go into the final game of the season with survival destiny in their own hands, in fact they could be confirmed as staying up depending on other results on Sunday, well, assuming they collect the points in this one first.
Stoke’s run of just one win in the last nine games could cost the Potters a top-10 finish? Nothing but a visit for Arsenal in the visit of the bet365 Stadium in the late kick off will be enough for the top-four hopes though – these could effectively end if Manchester City win earlier in the day and the Gunners are beaten.
Having looked odds on to stay up three successive defeats for Crystal Palace has seen them dragged back into the relegation dogfight. But, a point for Palace in the visit of third-bottom Hull and they’ll be safe, Sam Allardyce working his magic again. Anything but a win in this game at Selhurst Park for City on Sunday and they could effectively be relegated.
West Ham, unbeaten in five, have had a mixed bag of a season, but they could still finish in the top-10. If that’s deemed as success only the Hammers hierarchy will know? Liverpool, third, would take a huge step towards a confirmed top-four finish with a win at the London Stadium, in fact it could be assured depending on the Arsenal result on Saturday, the Gunners do have a game in hand.
If Tottenham’s bid to win the title hasn’t been ended on Friday evening – a Chelsea win at West Brom would do it – Spurs’ quest could be over when Manchester United, who booked a Europa League final place in midweek, visit White Hart Lane on Sunday.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
