ADAM Barrett chose to leave Southend to get his football career back on track.

But the defender, 30, was handed a free transfer after getting his contract -which had two years left to run -cancelled by Southend and Crystal Palace were quick to pounce with a deal until 2012.

Barrett told the SPL ‘It was sad to leave but the way it was going at Southend I had to get out for the good of my career,’ said Barrett.

‘When I first went there the club was really on the up, we had a lot of success, and there were plans for a new stadium, which was all really exciting. But unfortunately the last 18 months to two years the things going on off the field were just unbearable.

‘I just want to get back to playing with a smile on my face and be able to concentrate on my career – I wasn’t able to do that.’
