29 year old midfielder Mile Jedinak has now been officially named as Australia’s skipper for the upcoming World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Having helped guide Palace to Premiership survival, it was known Jedinak would be going and that he was one of the favourites to lead the side, but now it’s been confirmed.

Speaking to the press following the announcement, Mile said.

‘To be handed the responsibility of captaining my country at the World Cup is humbling, yet incredibly exciting. Just pulling the Socceroo shirt on fills me with pride but to be leading out my country and these players at the World Cup on behalf of all Australians is special.’

Jedinak’s first game as skipper came back in March in their friendly against Ecuador, but he now replaces veteran defender Lucas Neill as the permanent skipper.

Coach Ange Postecoglou said that Jedinak epitomises ‘everything that is great’ about Australian football at the moment, and being named as captain is an honour he richly deserves following his season with Palace and his attitude whilst on international duty.

43 capped Jedinak, will be supported by Tim Cahill and Mark Bresciano who have been named as vice skippers.
