Warnock Laments Villa Turning Points

Manager Neil Warnock wasn’t a happy man at full time as he saw Palace waste a host of chances in a game we more than dominated and ultimately lost.

A goal from Christian Benteke just after the half hour mark following a mistake from defender Scott Dann was enough to give them victory, and try as we might, even with a couple of penalty shouts to boot, we just couldn’t find a way past their keeper.

Speaking to the press after the game, Dann’s error obviously took centre stage through frustration.

‘I think he should’ve kicked it over the stand, and not be ashamed to do it. Brede could have come out as well, but these decisions they make, they stand of fall. It’s unfortunate for Scotty because he’s probably been our best player. It’s a cruel punishment, but hopefully he’ll learn by that – you can’t score in row Z can you. I can’t fault the effort, I thought we started really well, played some good stuff and created some good chances.’

In further quotes carried by the Croydon Advertiser Warnock went on to talk about the game more, but also how we now have to show a reaction against Tottenham Hotspur in the next match and make our chances count.

‘They didn’t have to work hard for the goal, that’s a disappointment and we couldn’t get a goal back. I thought the corners were poor and the gambling in the box. You’ve got your predators who can tap those chances in. That last one that went between three of our players, the last one from Wilfried Zaha, and they are the ones that really count. You’ve got to take advantage of opportunities like that. I thought we just lacked that little bit of quality. I think the lads gave everything and we’ve got to dust ourselves down and get this disappointment over and try and prove all the coupon doubters wrong on Saturday.’

As for the main potential penalty shout when Fraizer Campbell went down in the box, the gaffer confirmed he had spoken to the referee about it, but said having looked at replays, the referee was in the wrong place to see it properly so he can’t blame him for that.

‘I’ve just said to Michael, when I’ve watched it you can’t really blame him because he’s in a bad position. He hasn’t actually seen the right arm take down Fraizer, when Bolasie crosses it, Michael looks at Bolasie rather than at where the ball’s going.’

Warnock goes on to say that on some nights you get shouts like that and on others you don’t, and unfortunately for us it wasn’t given but he knows Campbell wouldn’t have just gone down because he had a good chance to put it in but he also commented he would be looking for a striker in January with similar attributes to Benteke as in a game where we had a bundle of chances, he had two of note in effect and put one away and he knows that’s the difference.
