Former midfielder Darren Ambrose has been voted as our Goal of the Decade winner in the recent vote.

Having joined us from Charlton back in 2009, he went on to make a total of 112 starting appearances for us over his 3 years with us, with an additional 14 from the bench, and in that time he scored 39 times.

His goal back in 2011 against Manchester United has been crowned the winner.

Travelling to Old Trafford in November of that year, his 35 yard thumper polled 72% of the fans vote which was held as part of the 110 year anniversary celebrations.

Dwight Gayle’s goal against Aston Villa back in 2013 came in in second place, and Mile Jedinak’s free kick against Liverpool last season came in as third but both were some way off Ambrose’s winner.

Speaking to Crystal Palace FC when he was informed of the win, Ambrose explained.

‘It’s a massive honour for me and my family and I’m absolutely delighted. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love the club; it was the best time in my career. I remember being on the bench to start off with and being really disappointed so I stayed behind at training to unleash some frustration, and I was hitting them from that distance and blazing them wide and into the trees behind the goal! I came on at half-time and it came naturally because I’d done so many the day before. It wasn’t until the end of the game that I watched it back and thought ‘I shouldn’t have been shooting from distance!’. It was a great moment for me and everywhere I go I get remembered for that goal. I scored a lot of important goals for Palace but that was my favourite.’

Ambrose currently plys his trade for Colchester United.

Eddy, I am a bit curious how he joined you “back in 2009” and still managed to score a goal for you in 2001. Could that have been 2010?

2011 – fat fingers and lacklustre proof reading! Cheers for the spot Mr Gunner.
