Dougie Freedman was beside himself last night as our great start to the season is now seeing a mini cup run to boot.

Speaking to Crystal Palace FC Freedman was delighted to see Palace move into the quarter finals of the Carling Cup for the first time in NINE years and he was thrilled with the performance and commitment of the players – especially as he again shook things up.

‘We are pleased, it was a very hard fought win. We had to defend for most of the game, and we defended very well and that enabled us to get the goals. Two good goals and I thought over 90 minutes we deserved the win.’

Freedman also confirmed that Darren Ambrose was fine after the game, despite taking a knock when scoring.

As the game against Southampton was based on our strength in defence, it was a good time for Freedman to talk about the difference it has made to our season, especially as we now have four clean sheets in a row.

‘It didn’t take a rocket scientist, when I took over we had the worst defensive record out of the whole 92 clubs in the league – so that was the priority. A lot of hard work goes into it and I think we’re seeing the benefits.’

So what next on our Cup charge?

‘Let’s hope it’s a home draw against a big club and we’ll pit our wits against them and see how we go.’

What a difference a summer can make eh!
